Peace Messenger February 2012

FROM CLAIRNEL

Next Jesus was taken into the wild by the Spirit for the Test. The Devil was ready to give it. Jesus prepared for the Test by fasting forty days and forty nights”.  Matthew 4:1-2

In February we enter the season of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter, which is to be used for prayer, study, and “fasting”, in preparation for celebrating Easter.  Early in the Christian Church, the period of Lent was used as a time to educate potential converts, who would then join the church Easter week.

Over the years I have had many adults who have told me that you wish we could have an adult Confirmation class.  You realize that there were things you have forgotten, or never knew.  With this in mind, this year I have decided to use our Lenten Mid-Week time to focus on “Christianity 101”.  We will share lessons similar to some of the Confirmation classes, and the some of the Confirmands will share with us their Confirmation Speeches.

Three others of this group decided to donate their harvest to a young couple in the community in need of help. Thanks to the many others who helped.

MISSION MOMENTS

I think the trip taught me a lot about life. How life can change very fast for people who look for God in their lives. And how much God can do for my life, you, everyone who lets God into their heart. It meant loving God for what he can do for me and everyone in the world.

The most fun thing I did was I got to spend time with friends and met new people at the place I went to. Helping others at the centers I went to, having more freedom to spend money and making my own choices.

I saw God in the way he touched a man named Steve at Network Café. I saw God in how everyone in my group worked so hard to help others and how I learned to work to help others. And, how DOOR really understands.

PEACE UCC DISASTER RECOVERY TEAM

The Peace UCC Disaster Recovery Team was invited to work on a mission station located at the South Joplin Disciples of Christ Church. The Mission Station is a 1960’s era Quonset hut which is being repurposed as the base of operations for a partnership between the Disciples of Christ Church and the United Church of Christ. Your team went to complete interior framing, the installation of waste plumbing, supply plumbing and the setting of seven shower units in 2.5 days. The tasks were completed and we returned home safely Monday evening. Those representing Peace Church were Benny Jestis, Orion Beckmeyer, Dale Wilson, Don Wilson, Dale Lenger and Biff Barner.

The station will house up to 36 volunteers and is scheduled to come online around March 18th. Registration for this station was opened for teams a couple of weeks ago and in the first 30 hours, the building was booked out to July.
