Peace Messenger March 2010

From Clairnel

Sing to God a brand-new song, sing God’s praises all over the world!”  Isaiah 42:10

Sing to God a new song.  At least four different times, the Bible instructs us to sing a new song.  As much as we love the old songs, we are also trying to sing some new songs during worship.  We are doing this because we love our children and young adults, and we want them to be able to sing praises to God in a style and language that is familiar to them, just as we older adults have sung praises to God in songs and hymns that are comfortable to us.  We are also doing it because God told us to—it’s right there in the Bible.

I know it is difficult to try new things sometimes.  I have been interested to read comments on Facebook from people who do not like the new format on this “social networking web site”.  Facebook did not become a “social networking tool” until August of 2005—that’s 4 ½ years ago.  Facebook as we knew it was only 4 ½ years old, and still we didn’t want to see any changes.  We wanted it as it had “always been”.  There seems to be something in us that resists change.  I understand this, because I am one who would like to have seen Facebook remain the same as it was.

Yet God calls us to newness—to new life, to new creativity, to new songs even.

Here at Peace UCC we are not planning to give up the old hymns.  In fact, we invite you to tell us your favorite hymns, and we will try to include them in an upcoming worship service.  But we are willing to try something new—especially because it means a lot to some of our younger members, and because they mean a lot to us.   We are also willing to try some new songs because God asks us to do so.  Sing unto God a new song….

I remember an old saying, “Make new friends but keep the old.  One is silver; the other Gold.”  How very true!  As we try new hymns and songs of praise, I encourage you to try to make new friends while keeping the old.  Our worship will be enriched by doing so.

“Dear Rev Nervik and the Congregation,
As chairman of the Pastoral Search Committee of the Columbia UCC, I send you a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ for serving as a neutral pulpit for Rev Steve Swope, a candidate for our pastoral vacancy.  We feel very positive about Rev Swope, as you can imagine, and hearing him preach in your church reinforced those good feelings as we continue in the calling process.  ‘Lending’ us your pulpit during your worship service was very generous of you and demonstrates to us the strong bond of fellowship which our congregation shares with you.  Peace and Blessing be unto you and yours.”

Family In Need

The Board of Christian Education is sponsoring a food drive for the family in need that we helped at Christmas.  The family still has great needs, so we thought we would give them a food basket for Easter, and to help them while the children (all 7 of them!) are home from school for Spring Break.  Please bring your donations to church by March 21 so that we can deliver the basket on March 24 or 25.  Below is a suggested list for donations:

      * Pastas                  * Flour, sugar, salt, etc

      * Canned goods     * Meats/cheese

      *Peanut butter and jelly

      *Cereals                 * Cleaning products
