Summer 2011 Youth Mission Trip to Denver

Youth Mission Trip 2012

Our youth and chaperons will leave for Orlando, FL  on June 2 and return on June 9.  They will be volunteering at "Give Kids the World Village" during the week.  Thirteen youth and 3 chaperons have signed up for this mission trip.  The youth will be hosting fund raisers throughout the year to help pay for their mission trip.

We will be volunteering with children with potentially life threatening illnesses.

Tasks will include serving and cleaning up after dinner, working in the ice cream parlor, operating the merry-go-round or miniature train, hosting a Christmas party, working in the warehouse, or doing office work, etc.  Volunteers must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 16 can only work at specific tasks (like the ice cream parlor or the train station.)  We must have 1 adult for each 4 youth under age 18.  At present we have at least 6 adults interested in going, so we should be OK.

We will fly to Orland on Sunday, June 13 and return on Saturday, June 19.  We will stay together in a rented house.  Most of us will sleep on airmattresses, etc, on the floor.

Cost will be $400 to $500, according to the cost of airfare when we make reservations.  Fundraising will cover most of that cost.  We will work Monday through Thursday, and have Friday for recreation.  The group will decide together what we want to do for recreation.

If we decide to go to Disney World, we can get free tickets by volunteering at approved projects (such as Habitat for Humanity) beginning in January.  People under 18 must volunteer with their parent/guardian.  If you volunteer 1 day, you can get a free 1 day pass.  See the link below.

Give Kids the World Village is a whimsical resort for families of children with life threatening illnesses.  Families come for a week to forget about doctors and illness, and make memories.  When ill children “Make a Wish”, about 80% wish to go to Disney World.  For most of these families, this is their first time traveling outside their home state.  Often, when a child is seriously ill, the family spends all their resources on medical care.  Lodging, food, car rental, and attraction tickets are provided for the families at no cost.  Thousands of volunteers make Kid’s Village possible!  So far they have served more than 95,000 families from 50 states and 70 countries.

Need to do:

  1.  Get commitments
  2. Raise awareness
  3. Raise money
  4. Prepare (ie Hospice)
  5. Plan logistics
  6. Plan Recreation
  7. Make reservations/airline and housing
  8. Sign up for work groups for during the trip
  9. Write our Trip Covenant
  10. Pick out a theme song (spiritual)
  11. Decide your own church policies (ie how much each youth will pay)
  12. Other?

DOOR VOLUNTEER HEALTH FORM

While every attempt is made to make the DOOR program a safe and fun experience, there is always the chance that volunteers will need medical care.  Accidents can and do happen while at the job site, during recreational activities, during free time and during the trip to and from San Antonio.  The DOOR program has no medical insurance for DOOR volunteers.  We ask that group leaders check to make certain each participant (youth and sponsor) has medical insurance and has filled out the following form.  In the case of youth, this form needs to be completed and signed by the parent or guardian.  This completed form must be brought along to Denver.

PACKING CHECK LIST

San Antonio spring and summer weather is variable.  Expect temperatures to range from 32 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit  (Spring) and 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (Summer).  Dress will always be casual - shorts/jeans and T-shirts being standard.  In the spring it can get cool at night so bringing a sweatshirt or light jacket is a good idea. Work clothes will be subject to wear and tear and possible paint stains. Some of the agencies that DOOR works with do require that all volunteers wear long pants and closed toed shoes.  Pack with this in mind.  It’s a good idea to mark your clothes with your name.  The following is a suggested list.
